VISITING THE GAMBIA — WHAT'S THE BEST TIME TO GO

For nature, culture and authentic local experiences, every season has something special to offer — from the lush green landscapes of the rainy season to the golden, sun-drenched scenery of the dry months. Travel is possible all year round… just do not expect the same atmosphere twice.

Each month brings something different — changing landscapes, seasonal activities, everyday life in the villages, wildlife, birdlife, and new colours across the country. And whenever you decide to come, it is our mission to make sure you get the very best out of your journey.

Below, we give you a quick overview of what to expect month by month.
Spoiler: there is no wrong choice — only different kinds of magic.

OCTOBER

October is a beautiful time to visit The Gambia.

The rainy season is coming to an end, the country gradually becomes drier, and although it can still feel warm and humid at times, nature is at its absolute best. The landscapes are lush, vibrant and intensely green, giving the whole country a fresh and lively atmosphere.

It is also a wonderful period for travellers who enjoy wildlife and the smaller details of nature. Butterflies, insects and reptiles such as chameleons are often easier to encounter during this time, adding even more colour and variety to the experience.

For anyone who loves green scenery, rich nature and a more tropical feel, October is truly one of the most beautiful months to explore The Gambia.

  • Rainfall: Nil

  • Temperature during the day: between 26° and 31°

  • Temperature at night: between 20° and 23°

NOVEMBER

November is less humid and the temperature is more comfortable than in October. The migratory birds from the north and south are gradually arriving in The Gambia, so the number of species is large and varied. Until mid-November, you can still see birds in breeding plumage. The grasses are still green and the flowers still attract many butterflies.

  • Rain: None

  • Temperature during the day: between 26° and 31°

  • Temperature at night: between 19° and 22°

DECEMBER

This is one of the very best times to visit.

The dry season is beginning, but The Gambia is still beautifully green after the rains. Temperatures are very pleasant — cool in the morning, warm during the day, and comfortable again in the evening.

It is a wonderful period for nature, scenery and travel in general, with lush landscapes, fresh colours and a very enjoyable climate. As the season gradually becomes drier, the grasses slowly begin to turn yellow in some areas, creating beautiful contrasts across the countryside.

For many travellers, this is a top month to experience The Gambia at its most vibrant, comfortable and diverse.

  • Rain: None

  • Temperature during the day: between 25° and 30°

  • Temperature at night: between 17° and 19°

JANUARY AND FEBRUARY

The climate becomes increasingly dry during this period, creating beautiful golden landscapes and clear, warm days.

January and February are excellent months to travel, with pleasant mornings and evenings, little rainfall, and many opportunities to enjoy both nature and everyday life at a relaxed pace. The yellow grasses and dry scenery give the countryside a very different character from the green season, with open views and warm colours throughout the landscape.

Lower water levels along the Gambia River can also make this a particularly rewarding time for inland excursions and boat trips. In some areas, it may even be a very good period for spotting hippos.

  • Rainfall: None

  • Temperature during the day: between 26° and 31°

  • Temperature at night: between 16° and 18°

MARCH, APRIL AND MAY

March, April and May fall in the heart of the dry season. Days are warm and sunny, while mornings and evenings are often still very pleasant.

This is a beautiful time to travel, with golden landscapes, clear skies and excellent conditions for exploring both nature and local life. Inland areas can become very hot, so we often design our tours to make the most of the cooler coastal regions and the best moments of the day.

The lower water levels along the Gambia River also make this period especially interesting for boat trips and wildlife viewing further inland. In some areas, it can even be a very good time to look for hippos.

  • Rainfall: None

  • Temperature during the day: between 27° and 32°

  • Temperature at night: between 18° and 21°

JUNE

June officially marks the start of the rainy season, although in recent years rainfall has often remained limited during this month.

It is a quieter, transitional period, with landscapes gradually changing and nature preparing for the months ahead. Temperatures can be high inland, so trips that include the cooler coastal areas are often especially pleasant at this time of year.

For travellers who enjoy a calmer atmosphere, softer seasonal changes and a more relaxed pace, June can still be a very rewarding time to visit.

  • Rain: 6 days on average

  • Temperature during the day: between 29° and 33°

  • Temperature at night: between 22° and 25°

JULY - AUGUST - SEPTEMBER

July marks the real start of the green season, and after the first rains The Gambia begins to look fresh, lush and full of life.

In recent years, July has often remained relatively dry, with less rain than many travellers expect. From August into September, the landscapes become even more beautiful — intensely green, dramatic and full of atmosphere.

This is a wonderful time for travellers who love nature at its most vibrant and do not mind a bit of adventure. Rain showers, thunderstorms, lightning and muddy roads can all be part of the experience, especially later in the season. That is exactly what makes these months so special for some visitors: the scenery is stunning, the light can be spectacular, and the country feels alive in a completely different way.

It is not the easiest season, but for adventurous travellers, August and September can be among the most rewarding and beautiful months to explore The Gambia.

  • Rain: 14 days on average

  • Temperature during the day: between 29° and 35°

  • Temperature at night: between 25° and 28°
